In @hjlbx 's post Application White-Listing (Software Restriction Policy & Anti-Executable), he listed some literature regarding Application Whitelist (Anti-EXE). Among the literature, NSA's document mentioned that:So, in my opinion, I think an anti-executable program has two basic characteristics:User could implicitly define what programs could be executed.Any program that is not implicitly allowed will be blocked from running in a default-deny manner.I think these two characteristics are basic requirements to an anti-executable program. For example, although the Hyper-Sensitive mode of Trend Micro and the Hardened Mode of Avast could also prevent the execution of suspicious programs, they cannot be called anti-executable, because the users cannot implicitly define the whitelist. By contrast, these two products store the whitelist on the cloud server.HIPS program could monitor the suspicious activities of programs. Some of them could monitor the execution of programs (e.g., Comodo Firewall, Private Firewall, etc), some of them could not (e.g., Spyshelter Free & Spyshelter Premium), some of them "partially" could (e.g. Outpost Firewall could only monitor the execution of programs that can connect to the network). For those HIPS programs who can monitor the execution, they could be used as "Anti-EXE" when they are properly configured. @hjlbx have posted many times that how to use Comodo to emulate the famous anti-EXE programs, such as AppGuard, EXE Radar Pro and VoodooShield. But anti-exe programs still have some features that can hardly be emulated by HIPS programs. For example, EXE Radar Pro, Bouncer Beta, and Smart Object Blocker Beta could define the whitelist in the granular of command line arguments. I do not know any HIPS program could do this. Maybe MD could? I am not familiar with MD...So, could Spyshelter Firewall (SSF) be used as an anti-executable? As mentioned by @hjlbx a long time ago in my thread (Spyshelter *Firewall* can be also used as an anti-exe), the answer is "Yes and No".First of all, SSF satisfy the two requirements listed above:By checking "Auto-block suspicious behavior", SSF could work in a default-deny manner. In the Application Execution Control Panel, you can define your own whitelist. However:In the application execution control panel, you can only create rules for .exe files, but cannot for script files, dlls, and any other PE files. You cannot define a rule for a folder in the application execution control panel, let alone paths with wild chars. So, SSF could be used as Anti-EXE, but not strong enough compared with some other anti-exe programs.

Only has auto quarantine these days. McAfee would be fine for anyone who can live with auto quarantine. But the auto quarantine, means that I only use it on my test computer, even though I have a license for it. #15 Not really. Kaspersky, Avast/AVG and many others can be configured to ask before taking an action. #16 Not really. Kaspersky, Avast/AVG and many others can be configured to ask before taking an action. But just about all of them, don't let you whitelist a file when it is detected. #18 @Ludditus I may be wrong, as it's been a while since I used AVG or Avast, but I think it will still auto quarantine some files. It's important to me to be prompted every single time a threat is detected and to have the option to whitelist it. #19 @roger_m I'm not sure they still do that. I've just go back to AVG Free after some years of not using either of Avast/AVG, and so far it always asked first if told so. In my experience, Panda and Bitdefender auto quarantine some files, no matter what they're told to do (i.e. configured to ask first). #20 @Ludditus I guess I should try it again. I asked Avast a few years about prompting before quarantining and they said they wouldn't add it.From memory, you can get Panda's real time protection to prompt you when it finds something, but when running scans, everything gets auto quarantined. However, it may be the other way round, as its been a while since I used Panda. How to whitelist a program on avast - newsoftwarepro

User, the License Administrator File->Login function will not work. This is reserved for Indie and full Commercial Houdini users. The easiest solution would be to remove the current licenses file and launch Apprentice to go through the licensing process once again. I'm on Windows and my licenses just don't work. Most likely something is blocking the connection to the local or remote sesinetd.exe license server program. We have seen issues with security software such as Avast and AVG blocking Houdini. Please check your security software and please whitelist sesinetd.exe (TCP port 1715) and hserver.exe (TCP port 1714).Ensure that the services HoudiniServer and HoudiniLicenseServer are in the running state in services.msc.One way to test is through the Power Shell:netstat -an | findstr 1715The above command tests if the license server daemon is listening on the port.Next launch the Command Line Tool shipped with Houdini (hcmd.exe) and type:sesictrl ping or sesictrl ping substitute your machine name above where it says machine-name.If this does not report back Successfully pinged, please check your antivirus/firewall settings. I requested that my licenses start on a future date, why can't I see them available yet? Please watch your email for a message from licensemanager@sidefx.com notifying you that your license entitlements are available to redeem. The licenses will be visible (and available to redeem) on the requested Start Date. New 03 Oct 2010 #180 Shawn,With settings as shown in attachment, I:1. started CCleaner2. disconnected the ACResult: CCleaner terminated very abruptly. New 03 Oct 2010 #181 Now that is strange that it would gray that option out, yet still have it work. Tutorial updated to have both unchecked. New 03 Oct 2010 #182 I agree that it is strange, and I wouldn't have checked except that I've had that greying out bite me before. New 10 Oct 2010 #183 After reading this thread I ran across a program called "UAC Controller Tool" by ITknowledge2 which lets you create a UAC whitelist. I thought someone here might be interested. But just so you know, I haven't tested or even installed the program yet. I wanted to post here first to get some feedback, not only if anyone has used this program but if using it will create a hole in security. Edit: Turns out the website that originally said this program created a whitelist was wrong... it doesn't. It only provides an easier way to change the UAC settings. Reminder on your calendar to cancel your account after your initial subscription is over. It’s a shame that Avast does not offer a single-month subscription, as this really rules it out for any customers in need of a VPN for security while they travel, or to gain accessibility if traveling to a country with excessive online censorship such as China.Best Deal for IPVanish:Get a 69% discount with an annual plan.Best Deal for Avast VPN:Get 46 percent off with Avast’s two-year plan.Avast VPN vs IPVanish featuresWhen it comes to VPN features, it seems fair to say that Avast SecureLine VPN is a little lacking when compared to IPVanish. Both VPNs provide a kill switch, which ensures your internet will be cut should the VPN connection fail for any reason. This is great in terms of privacy because it means you never have to worry about leaking unencrypted data to your ISP.Split tunneling is available with IPVanish on Android and Fire OS. With Avast VPN, you can whitelist URLs that you do not want to access through the VPN. This allows you to visit some websites outside of the VPN tunnel if you want toAvast VPN comes with automatic wifi protection that connects the VPN automatically if you join an unknown wifi network. This helps to protect you against hackers who set up a fake ‘evil twin’ wifi hotspot in order to intercept your data. It also helps to prevent companies from tracking your web visits if you use the public wifi in a hotel, airport, or coffee shop.IPVanish has a similar feature that automatically connects the VPN any time an internet connection is detected. This ensures that the VPN connects every single time you use the internet – whether at home, at work, or using public wifi.Avast Secure Line VPN does not offer support for routers, set-top boxes, consoles, or other devices. It is only suitable for Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android. The good news is that we have nifty guides for setting up a Windows or Mac computer as a VPN protected wifi hotspot. So, as long as you use the VPN on a desktop or laptop computer – you could still connect other devices to the VPN yourself via your hotspot.IPVanish, on the other hand, is directly compatible with Fire Sticks, Fire TVs, Kodi and Roku boxes, Linux machines, and various brands of routers (including DD-WRT, Tomato, ASUSWRT and ASUSWRT-Merlin). Plus, you can also connect to other devices by setting up a virtual hotspot. Both IPVanish and Avast VPN come with DNS leak protection built in by default. You don’t have to worry about enabling it in the app; it will prevent leaks at all times. Both these providers also always handle your DNS requests with their own servers, which means that your web requests are proxied securely to give you online privacy. The benefit of IPVanish when compared to AvastVPN is that you get a few extra features.
2025-04-19Only has auto quarantine these days.
2025-04-19User, the License Administrator File->Login function will not work. How do I update the email address associated with my SideFX Login account? In order to update your email*: 1. Log into www.sidefx.com with your username2. Click the top-right profile icon3.
2025-04-20New 03 Oct 2010 #180 Shawn,With settings as shown in attachment, I:1. started CCleaner2. disconnected the ACResult: CCleaner terminated very abruptly. Sorry for the confusion. --> Last edited by 65Cobra427SC; 10 Oct 2010 at 11:31. I don't see where you can create a whitelist, you can change the settings right from the notification area without a restart, and it works for that. I don't know about the security aspect though.
