An existential threat. An unlikely alliance. A massive feat of engineering. Today, I’m going to share one of the most important stories in Rogue Amoeba history.The First 18 YearsWe begin at the beginning, way back in 2002 when Rogue Amoeba shipped version 1.0 of our flagship app Audio Hijack. From that very first version, Audio Hijack could capture any audio playing on the Mac, including audio from other applications. This took quite a bit of sorcery, because MacOS did not provide any assistance in this area.We next abruptly flash forward through a rather astonishing 18 years. In this time, digital audio became a major part of daily life. Voice chat took off, podcasts boomed, and music (first downloadable and then streaming) flourished. Meanwhile, Rogue Amoeba developed an array of tools powered by our unmatched ability to capture any audio on the Mac. Our lineup included Airfoil, Audio Hijack, Loopback, Piezo, and SoundSource.Even as our products steadily grew in popularity, our relationship with Apple was almost non-existent. Plenty of individuals inside the company were fans, but we received very little attention from Apple as a corporate entity. We didn’t much mind being outsiders, but it meant that we often had zero notice of breaking changes introduced by Apple.During this time, Apple placed an emphasis on improving the security of MacOS, continually locking the operating system down further and further. Rogue Amoeba has unveiled Farrago 2, a new version of its soundboard app for macOS that adds over 50 new features, as well as dozens of additional bug fixes and refinements. The app offers playback of audio for use in podcasts and live performances. Farrago provides users with the ability to instantly trigger playback of songs, audio clips, and sound effects with just a key press or mouse click.According to the folks at Rogue Amoeba, podcasters can use Farrago to include musical accompaniment and sound effects while recording, while theater techs can run the audio for all manner of live performances. It can provide quick access to a large library of sounds, as well as help running through a defined list of audio.Farrago also teams up with Rogue Amoeba’s audio routing tool Loopback and its audio recorder Audio Hijack to get podcasters the exact audio their shows need. It may just be, though, that neither of them is good enough to carry a show by themselves. Regardless of the topic or how you want to make your podcast, you need to make the audio interesting. And the best, fastest way to do that is to include other audio elements such as clips or interviews.Rogue Amoeba's FarragoYou've heard radio shows where the main presenter introduces something that then sounds like a four-minute documentary. It has its own reporter, he or she is talking to many people and often on location, often with relevant music or other sounds too. This is called a package and it will take you longer to make then the rest of the show. It's worth it if you can do it well and you have the time, but there are faster ways to vary the audio on a podcast.Whether you make packages, buy music tracks or record adverts, you can then play them into your podcast recording via Rogue Amoeba's Farrago. And Rogue Amoeba's LoopbackLoopback takes audio from anywhere on your Mac or an instrument plugged into it, and routes that to anywhere else you want. So if we're recording a Skype call with a co-host and we want to include a clip from an interview, we can play it so that both hosts hear it.Skype only allows you one microphone and has no options to pass any other audio through it at the same time. So Loopback creates one audio source which is a combination of your microphone and, say, Adobe Audition. Then it routes that through Skype
