Several readers have reported that they are unable to access the Vikatan Group website after a cartoon of PM Modi in chains was published in Vikatan Magazine. | Photo Credit: Vikatan Group Logo/Website The news website www.vikatan.com, belonging to leading Tamil magazine group Vikatan, had become inaccessible for many users from Saturday (February 15, 2025) evening to Sunday (February 16) afternoon. The magazine sought to link this development to the publication of a cartoon depicting Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with his hands and legs chained, seated beside U.S. President Donald Trump in its digital magazine Vikatan Plus on February 10.However, the takedown of the magazine’s website was not announced formally by any Union government Ministry. Different internet service providers and telecom operators displayed varying messages explaining the website’s inaccessibility. For instance, a message by Bharti Airtel Limited’s network said the website was taken down on the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (IT)’s orders.We will stand strong in defense of freedom of expression...For nearly a century, Vikatan has stood firmly in support of freedom of expression. On some broadband networks and telecom sites, the website remained accessible and, on others, the site was accessible by clicking the Google search result, but not by directly typing the URL into the address bar. This is a common occurrence for domains that have been recently blocked. It is unclear if telecom operators and internet service providers have yet rolled back the block.Another takedown message on a different network showed that the site was blocked due to an order from “law enforcement agencies”. A telecom industry executive said any such order — which was simultaneously sent to all telecom operators and fixed broadband providers — would be routed through the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), which was the competent authority for issuing block orders. Multiple requests sent to the DoT and its Secretary by The Hindu went unanswered on Sunday.The incident prompted Chief Minister M.K. Stalin and several other political party leaders to condemn the Union government for what they said was the “blocking” of the website. A post on Vikatan’s official X handle on Saturday read: “There have been numerous reports stating that the Vikatan website has been blocked by the Central government. Many users from different locations have reported that they are unable to access it. However, as of now, there has been no official announcement from the Central government regarding the blocking of the website.”It said the cartoon highlighted “the issue of Indians being handcuffed and deported from the U.S., while Prime Minister Modi remained silent on the matter”.This cartoon, it added, was criticised by the BJP’s supporters, and its State president K. Been looking at this character a great deal is because he was really not a person in ministry. He was a civil engineer. And what I would like to do is talk a little bit about how he kept watch and how he organized a mission to rebuild the walls of his beloved city. Malcolm Muggeridge in the 1970s when he left the chaplaincy at Edinburgh. You know, he was a late comer to Christ. If you've never read anything by Muggeridge, I encourage you to pick up some of his books. I don't know of anyone who used the language so beautifully and so precisely and the phrases he would use would open up vistas of imagination and conviction. But he left the University of Edinburgh and spoke at St. Giles, the famous church, over a moral issue and a moral decision that had been made by the administrators. And he wrote about it later and alerted society as to where we were headed if the educational institutions lost their way. And he said this in his farewell address, the whole address is powerful. Imagine before on a prestigious student body, you as the chaplain are submitting your resignation and then the audience is hearing words like this. So dear Edinburgh students, this may well be the last time I address you. And this is what I want to say. And I don't really care whether it means anything to you or not. And whether you think there is anything in it or not. I want you to believe that this row I have had with your elected officers has nothing to do with any puritanical attitudes on my part. I have no belief in abstinence for abstinence's own sake, no wish under any circumstances to check any fulfilment of your life and your being.
