The 3,000-square-foot, 78-seat restaurant anchors the northwest corner of the food hall, opening onto the courtyard and including an entrance near The Standard food stall. Rêve is the only full-service restaurant in the Pizitz. In addition to tables and booths in the main dining room, the space includes a chef’s bar that offers guests front-row seats to the action in the exposed kitchen, a private dining room that faces Second Avenue North, and outdoor seating that is available on the patio when weather permits. The interior features preserved tile floors and century-old heart pine that goes back to the early days of the Pizitz building, as well as cold-rolled steel countertops that pay homage to Birmingham’s industrial roots.“The goal was to make it Parisian meets kind of edgy Brooklyn, where it’s not too stuffy,” Stull says. “And there’s a lot of history in this building, which is fun for us.”Stull commissioned Birmingham artist Mandy Maples to create two expressionistic abstract paintings -- which she titled Joie de vivre (or “joy of life”) I and II -- that help tell the story of Rêve.One of her paintings includes the French translation of a quote from famed chef and cookbook author James Beard: “Food is our common ground, a universal experience.”“Jacob sent me musical playlists that he listens to, so I listened to a lot of his French playlists while I made these pieces,” Maples says. “I layered the pieces with quotes and writings about his journey, so they’re really kind of a portrait of Jacob.”Paintings from Birmingham artist Mandy Maples on the far wall of the restaurant help. 2025-04-10Gift ever? Are you sure you’re not trans?”“No! I mean, when I thought it was a gift, I figured it was temporary. I was going to ask if this was for a few days? Or a week? But if you aren’t responsible...then why? Why am I like this? And for how long?” The ConsultantTwo weeks ago, Mandy and Sawyer had arrived at the trendy consultant with their own requests. Mandy was a model with her contract at risk due to the recent weight she had gained; Sawyer was a scrawny nerd looking to bulk up and get in shape. When the eccentric consultant popped their heads off and attached it to the other’s body, they were as shocked as they were skeptical. And yet a few months later, neither could argue with the results. Mandy looked over at her former body. It was skinnier than she had ever remembered being; the only problem, of course, was Sawyer’s dorky male head attached. Sawyer was equally impressed by how buff Mandy had gotten his body. After expressing their gratitude, the consultant smiled. “I’m glad you’re both happy,” She said. They both expected their heads to pop back onto their original bodies, but instead the consultant just continued to smile as they all sat there.“So, how do we get back normal?” Mandy finally asked.“Oh,” The consultant replied, “I only promised to get your bodies into the shape you desired. I never promised you’d get them back!” Nature's Way“I know...I know what you did to that poor woman,” Norman wheezed as he sat up in his hospital bed upon seeing the nurse enter, “You thought I was asleep when the nurse came in last night, but I saw you. With whatever evil Satanic stuff you pulled, you swapped into her body. You left her to die in your body. It’s not right. We’re old men, or at least we were. It’s nature’s way to one day pass, but you cheated it all and stole that young woman’s life.”Marvin scowled in response, but quickly put on a happy face. No matter how right Norman was, he couldn’t actually
2025-04-13There’s more than enough gore to satisfy any horror fan’s hunger. If killer clowns are your thing, it’s essential. —Jim Vorel22. MandyYear: 2018 Director: Panos CosmatosMore than an hour in, the film’s title appears, growing lichen-like, sinister and near-illegible, as all great metal album covers are. The name and title card—Mandy—immediately follows a scene in which our hero forges his own Excalibur, a glistening, deformed axe adorned with pointy and vaguely erotic edges and appurtenances, the stuff of H.R. Giger’s wettest dreams. Though Red (Nicolas Cage) could use, and pretty much does use, any weapon at hand to avenge the brutal murder of his titular love (Andrea Riseborough), he still crafts that beautiful abomination as ritual, infusing his quest for revenge with dark talismanic magic, compelled by Bakshi-esque visions of Mandy to do her bidding on the corporeal plane. He relishes the ceremony and succumbs to the rage that will push him to some intensely extreme ends. We know almost nothing about his past before he met Mandy, but we can tell he knows his way around a blunt, deadly object. So begins Red’s unhinged murder spree, phantasmagoric and gloriously violent. A giant bladed dildo, a ludicrously long chainsaw, a hilarious pile of cocaine, the aforementioned spiked LSD, the aforementioned oracular chemist, a tiger, more than one offer of sex—Red encounters each as if it’s the rubble of a waking nightmare, fighting or consuming all of it. Every shot of Mandy reeks of shocking beauty, stylized at times to within an inch of its intelligibility, but endlessly pregnant with creativity and control, euphoria and pain, clarity and honesty and the ineffable sense that director Panos Cosmatos knows exactly how and what he wants to subconsciously imprint into the viewer. Still, Mandy is a revenge movie, and a revenge movie has to satiate the audience’s bloodlust. Cosmatos bathes Red (natch) in gore, every kill hard won and subcutaneously rewarding. There is no other film this year that so effectively feeds off of the audience’s anger, then sublimates it, releasing it without allowing it to go dangerously further. We need this kind

2025-03-29Captain Lewis Cook had no clue what was going on. One second, it felt like the sun was blinding his vision from the cockpit (despite the sun being behind them), the next he was in the back of the plane. He realized he was the body of Mandy, one of the flight attendants on board. But if he was in her body, that meant someone else was in his body; and it was likely whoever that someone else might be, they probably were not a pilot. As such, he began to make a mad dash to the front of the plane. Many confused passengers were trying to stop him along the way, complaining about being in the wrong body as well.Sure enough, the person now inside his body (and the one inside the co-pilot’s body) were also confused about the body swap, as it seemed was whoever was in the body of the air traffic controller on the ground.Thinking quick, Lewis knew the best plan was to probably make an emergency landing. There was an abandoned landing strip not far away. Technically, it was too short for the airplane he was flying, but it would also reduce the risk from a collision from any other landing planes. Within moments, they were descending and eventually making a safe but rough landing. In the days to follow, Lewis was hailed as a hero for safely landing the plane in the midst of the Great Shift; whereas many others weren’t so lucky...
