One of the standout tracks from Daft Punk’s iconic 2001 album, Discovery, ‘Something About Us’ features subtle yet unforgettable synths. Here, we recreate their magic using u-he’s Hive. In today’s Synth Secrets, we’re doing a rare two-for-one. We’re highlighting the masterful, minimal touch of French pioneers Daft Punk by building the iconic tones of Something About Us from Discovery using u-he’s suite of synthesizers. Part of the allure of the Daft Punk sound is that their sounds are straightforward, allowing the music to take centre stage.Some of the nuances of the Discovery sound come from the specific gear they used, their well-curated drum samples, and the recorded electric guitar and bass, to be sure, but the rich and versatile engines in u-he’s Hive and Zebra are uniquely capable of getting extremely close to those sounds with a minimum of programming. Their filters probably sound similar. yeah... my comment was like 99.9% sarcasm. I did actually look though.I'm getting fatigued with people thinking a polyphonic Minimoog = any polyphonic Moog. The One is not a polyphonic Minimoog. The Memorymoog is not a polyphonic Minimoog. The Trigon 6 is not a Memorymoog is not a polyphonic Minimoog.If I wanted to try capturing some of what the One does in a VST, My (personal) first reach would probably be Zebra HZ. Loading a Moog type wavetable in to the oscillator with some subtle modulation to give it warmth, it has both types of filters which I could set up however I like. MSEGs, Modulation Matrix.Shit, I could probably even use Hive with the same oscillator setup. Even though it doesn't have those filters specifically it does have two filters you can route how you like and enough filter variations to cover most bases... At least enough to convince anyone that thinks a Minimoog plugin is the same as a Moog One.Oops, my bad... neither one of those plugins have faux wood siding or Moog style knobs. Yeah, that is a problem. Maybe someone can do a Zebra HZ skin with the wood and the knobs, so we can finely put this question to rest. I don’t know if a lot of people have done this as much as I have, but for various reasons I’ve had to downsize my studio and that means getting rid of stuff. Of course the first place to look is overlap. You quickly find out that a feature in one synth does not necessarily sound like a feature in another synth. A lot of the time you can get very similar results within a range, and then after that range, differences become very apparent. Sometimes one is clearly better, sometimes neither is better but different enough
