As the vessel will be based in Vanuatu & will also spend considerable time in Fiji I was wondering if you have any idea when a fix may be released in a software upgrade as it will be an issue for me that I would rather not have? You also say that iNavX has access to the largest library of up to date official charts and maps. Can you elaborate on this as both iNavX & Navionics use Navionics charts? is there any difference in the charts used - are they both the Gold version & does iNavX just have better charting features and capabilities? 22-01-2013, 02:40 #8 Registered User Join Date: Sep 2009 Location: Sydney, AustraliaBoat: Farr 44 Ocean Racer - Pit crew & backup helm. Hopefully one will come through soon. I have also noticed today on the Apps store that the Prices of the maps have increased. Navionics upgraded their maps to V4.1.1 from 13th Jan 2013. The Australasia & Africa V4.1 has increased from A$40.99 to A$69.99. The largest increase is for Caribbean & South America from $14.99

Hi there,Can someone explain to me why the following is so:I can buy worldwide Navionics charts - i.e every single chart I will ever need for the IPAD/Inavx via x-traverse for about $1,000 USD - but to purchase the same worldwide navionics charts for use on a PC using, say, PolarNavy, then it is going to cost me $6,500 USD (or 5,000 Euro) via Chartworld.I mean - WTF is this all about?Note: I am fairly new to electronic charting software so maybe this is something all you experienced PC and/or IPAD navigators have accepted - but I just don't understand the huge discrepancy. And, I guess it means I am going to use Inavx on an IPAD as my plotter - I can't justify the price of navionics charts for use on PC. 26-10-2012, 22:37 #2 Marine Service Provider Join Date: Feb 2008 Location: Pacific North West Posts: 215 Re: Navionics - why? Navionics has different pricing for different platforms (i.e. dedicated Chart plotter versus Mac/PC versus iPad versus iPhone). I believe Navionics thinking is the iPad or iPhone is less capable than the dedicated chart plotter or PC/Mac. Chartworld prices are consistently higher than other sources so while PolarNavy may seem like a good value, however once you look into the cost of charts it becomes much less so. __________________ GPSNavX - Marine navigation and weather software for Mac and iPhone/iPad/iPod 26-10-2012, 22:45 #3 Registered User Join Date: May 2011 Location: Currently in SpainBoat: Hanse 385 Posts: 674 Re: Navionics - why? Posts: 675 Images: 16 Re: iPad4 - iNavX v Navionics Pros & Cons Thanks for that, iNavx certainly seems to have a lot more features & functionality. With the recent loss of the Lagoon Catamaran "Next Life" in the Bahamas due to inaccuracies on the Navioinics charts along with reliance apparently being placed on the chartplotter as there did not seem to be any cross checking with paper charts. I wonder if there are any known suspect areas to be aware of for my forthcoming passage from St Martin to Vanuatu. I believe that charts around Tonga are reported to have inaccuracies for example. 22-02-2013, 04:37 #15 Registered User Join Date: Sep 2009 Location: Sydney, AustraliaBoat: Farr 44 Ocean Racer - Pit crew & backup helm. GPSNavX-Navigation Charting for Mac

In December to A$59.99. Big increase eh, although they did seem cheap before? The iNavx maps from x-traverse are now - 3XG Caribbean, Central & South America US$54.99 (no change) . 34XG Japan & Pacific Islands was US$54.99 but is now US$84.99. This now makes the prices for charts for both Navionics & iNavx in the same ballpark. Also on the App store the price for the iNavx app itself is A$51.99 but I could not find anything for the Navionics app - only the maps. Does anyone know if the Navionics app is built into the maps so you do not need to buy a separate application like you do for iNavx? 05-02-2013, 18:25 #10 Registered User Join Date: Nov 2010 Location: Bear, DEBoat: Island Packet 37 - Finistere Posts: 233 Navionics app is built into the chart purchase. 10-02-2013, 17:35 #11 Registered User Join Date: Sep 2009 Location: Sydney, AustraliaBoat: Farr 44 Ocean Racer - Pit crew & backup helm. Solid import/export functionality (pity it won't use dropbox, but you can't have everything).Charts look very good. I'd use it on my android too if they had an android version... unfortunately i'm stuck with navionics as the best option there, which has a major flaw - no route import. If Navionics price has gone up, it may be because now you can jailbreak IOS 6 devices, lots of sailors and their dogs will just use a pirated version for $0 . 14-02-2013, 02:20 #13 Marine Service Provider Join Date: Feb 2013 Location: Nantes- FranceBoat: Wauquiez, Amphora, 38' Posts: 18 Re: iPad4 - iNavX v Navionics Pros & Cons Quote: Originally Posted by Ozbullwinkle So, I would appreciate information from those who are aware of the pros & cons of the most recent releases of these applications. Chartworld prices are consistently higher than other sources so while PolarNavy may seem like a good value, however once you look into the cost of charts it becomes much less so. With all due respect, and I see you have a commercial interest so please don't take this the to heart - but I think it that it one extremely WEAK argument as to the price difference. To me it is nothing more than a giant rip off.And I don't want to pick on PolarNavy exclusively - because all the PC based Nav software (of which there are many) including PolarNavy do give you some free chart coverage - but chart coverage for rest of the world for any PC based nav software is a bloody rip off.The only thing that bugs me about Ipad is the sunlight viewing is not so good - but I see from doing a few searches on this froum that is a well known weakness of Ipad for navigation - and really about the only weakness overall that I can see.Others may feel different. 26-10-2012, 23:30 #5 cruiser Join Date: May 2008 Posts: 164 Re: Navionics - why? Didn't read your reply properly at first - yes agree that once you look into the cost of charts for PolarNavy then it is hard to justify it's worth.
