So this may be a trade off in bit rate quality even though it sounds better overall going into the NLS lower. I am not an expert on this subject, but there are some really great threads about the issue on the forum. As I understand the "lower bit rate resolution" only translates as less signal to noise ratio, which when tracking at 24 bit is not an issue as there is plenty to spare.I hit the NLS and other analog emulation plugins with an average -18 and peaks at maybe -12 or -10 on the NLS VU meters, which is roughly equivalent to analog 0db. (I love the new meter in PT11 which actually allows you to set where 0 db is so you can track with headroom built in and still feel good about it!) I don't sweat it if it gets up there a ways and still sounds good, though I listen very carefully to anything past -10 on the VU meter. Sometimes hitting the plugin harder can give a nice, subtle analog sounding "squash", but sometimes it isn't the sound I am looking for. By Mikael B ➡️ I usually set levels to -18dBFS RMS using FreeG as a meter. I don't really worry about peaks at all before I compress. With 24bit and 32bit audio there are in the vast majority of situations no bit rate quality issues to worry about at all. Yep, around -18dbFS for me too. That puts the peaks in striking range, usually if I want to push the main NLS fader to run the signal into the red. The NLS is designed to respond like the real desk, so sometimes overdriving the signal can be useful.Mind you, you will most likely need a Gain plugin to bring the signal back down to -18dB. Or the same effect could be achieved by adjusting the input volume of the next plugin accordingly. Well, turning down the output fader or the trim of the plug-in while keeping the drive up works for me. I'm not going for major distortion though, just some roundness and presence. NLS has become a staple, over the last few years. It's a bit more of a brute than Slate's nuanced VCC, but that's not a bad thing. I also really like the VCA faders with a touch screen. I do wish it was a little more CPU friendly, though. Slate has a clear advantage, there. All that said, the Mike Poole emulation is unlike any emulation I have heard, particularly in the lows. That, alone, makes it worth having (IMHO). I have been warming up to NLS lately again. The workflow is actually excellent and really fun in the box. I think now that my 'listening' and taste has gotten better, I am better at determining how much input
